A 60-day cruise through Australia was terminated days after the fatal incident of an older woman who was stranded by the cruise liner on a isolated tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the tropical location with fellow passengers from the vessel, but broke off from the group for a pause. The vessel left without her and went back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the lady was unaccounted for.

A large-scale hunt located her body the following day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the event, in coordination with investigators and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that passengers and personnel on the vessel were informed that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and earlier technical problems".

Through an announcement, he added that passengers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Officials also published an revised statement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" banning any further travelers from getting on the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the liner in the port city upon its coming back.

Timeline of Incidents

The liner originally sailed from Cairns on 24 October, and was merely two days into the voyage at the time of the elderly woman's demise. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the journey.

Guests on the ship - who generally pay tens of thousands of dollars to join the voyage - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the choice of trekking or underwater exploration.

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her relatives was "stunned and distressed that the liner left the island after an scheduled outing without my mum".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mum as an "active elderly person" who was a member of a hiking group.

"From the little facts we have been informed, it appears that there was a failure of care and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she wished the examination would be able to identify what "the company should have done that might have saved Mum's life".

"According to reports from the police that it was a very hot afternoon, and she became unwell on the hill climb," she stated.

"She was asked her to go back, alone. Then the ship departed, reportedly without doing a headcount.

"At some stage in that sequence, or soon after, mum passed away, by herself."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the operator was "cooperating fully with investigators to assist their inquiry".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has happened" and had offered its total backing to the relatives.

Maritime Business Practices

The ship accommodates up to one hundred twenty passengers with 46 crew, according to official details. It was purpose-built to access distant regions of Australia's coastline and is equipped with "small boats" - minor craft used to transport individuals on day excursions.

Events of this nature are uncommon, and cruise ships have procedures to track which individuals are embarking or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard really isn't an option," one expert remarked.

Cruise lines regard these methods with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such occurrences from taking place," the specialist continued.

"This seems to be most likely a shocking - and tragic - one-off."
