An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The wider security situation underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of official activities, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
