Preamble

Nottingham Forest v Malmö and memories of 1979. The both teams have a historical link, also meeting in Forest's last European campaign in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the European Cup final decades past that connects these teams, with the groundbreaking transfer the English forward heading the only goal of a largely forgettable match to secure historic victory for the red half of Nottingham.

"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the revelry," wrote the match reporter. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is hard to see being repeated – from second tier to continental competition in just three years."

Worth mentioning to reflect upon Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Nordic team to reach the final under English manager Bob Houghton.

Tonight's game is a distant from that peak, closer perhaps to the Uefa Cup first-round tie between Forest and Malmö in that era. Forest are absolutely buzzing after thrashing Liverpool at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since early November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The general expectation is on the home team tonight.

Numerous other matches on offer in this match tracking. The Glasgow club have already been lost to a European rival this season. Rangers are last place of the 36-team Europa League standings at the midpoint of the group stage with exactly zero. They urgently require a victory if they are to have any chance of achieving a comeback for a playoff spot.

We'll keep you up to date with all the late games and provide the current standings from the previous games, including Aston Villa v Young Boys and the Dutch-Scottish clash.
